<h2>Platform of the Madison County Democratic Committee</h2><h5><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);">Preamble</span></h5><p><em>We, the Madison County Democrats, inspired by the belief of our founding fathers in “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness,” are committed to a mission of securing and promoting these blessings for all, both at home and abroad. Seeking a government that, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, is “of the people, by the people, and for the people,” we embrace progressive principles that will move us forward and create a stronger democracy in order to help us better deal with America's local, state, national, and international issues.</em></p><p>                                                                                                                                    *****</p><p>In the progressive spirit that began with Franklin Delano Roosevelt and continues with Barack Obama, we insist on preserving our social and economic gains, on safeguarding our civil liberties, on protecting our personal and national security, on protecting our environment, on conserving our national resources for the benefit of this and future generations, and on favoring policies that support the bedrock of a strong and just society—our families and our local communities.</p><p>We insist on restoring fiscal responsibility in Washington and reject all irresponsible tax cuts benefiting mostly the rich and the super-rich.</p><p>We want to eliminate the use of Social Security and Medicare contributions to cover recurrent budget deficits caused by irresponsible tax cuts. We oppose any attempt to weaken and ultimately destroy America's health care by privatizing Medicare and eroding, or even eliminating, the Affordable Care Act.</p><p>We oppose the practice of burdening county and municipal governments with unfunded federal and state mandates. We believe that the practice in New York State of using multi-billion dollar bond issues to finance ongoing programs instead of using annual appropriations reduces accountability and increases the long-term cost of these programs.</p><p>We believe that the right of dissent must be protected at all times. We condemn any attempt to discredit dissent by questioning the patriotism of citizens who criticize government policies. We oppose the renewal of those provisions in the Patriot Act that unnecessarily erode our constitutional rights.</p><p>As rural New Yorkers, we support state and national policies that ensure the viability of family farms and protect our rivers and lakes from the devastating pollution of acid rain, PCBs, mercury, lead, and other contaminants. We support cooperative initiatives of government, business, and nonprofits that support economic and community development in upstate New York.</p><p>Believing in responsible and lawful gun ownership by responsible adults and in reasonable regulations, such as thorough background checks, to ensure that gun ownership does not threaten the community and its law enforcement officers, we support strengthening the Brady Bill and renewing the ban on assault weapons.</p><p>We believe that every individual must be guaranteed full and equal protection under the law, regardless o/ race, color, ethnic identity, national origin, religion, creed, sex, sexual identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, or economic status. Everyone should be empowered to develop their fuIl potential by means o/'a nurturing childhood, a formal education, and an equal opportunity for training and employment.</p><p>We support improved family assistance programs, an expanded early childhood education program, free vocational training, and a subsidized higher education that everyone can afford. A strong public education system sustains a democratic society committed to the ideal of equality and helps create and sustain a vibrant middle class. To this end, we seek a strong financial support of our public education system to ensure that, in the wealthiest nation in the history of mankind, every child has well-qualified teachers, suitable facilities, and the resources necessary to achieve excellence.</p><p>We support affirmative action in order to ensure that our increasingly diverse population is adequately represented in all trades and professions. We support the removal of barriers to career advancement that may hinder those who have been disadvantaged on account of socioeconomic status, gender, race, disability, age, or family status.</p><p>We recognize that we are a nation of immigrants and refugees in which everybody should be under the equal protection of law. Our current immigration policies leave millions of workers trapped in the shadows of our economy. We favor a fair, a realistic, and a sustainable immigration system that screens and inspects people and cargo at the border for security threats and grants legal status to hardworking immigrants. We support policies that extend educational and civic participation to our immigrant community.</p><p>We believe in the separation of church and state. Because we cherish our freedom of conscience, we are as opposed to restrictions on the free exercise of religion as we are to the imposition of religious observances, such as mandated prayers in public schools.</p><p>We will fight for a woman's right to make private and personal decisions regarding reproductive choice without interference or restriction from the government.</p><p></p>

<p>Immigration "Know Your Rights" training sessions inform people about their constitutional and legal rights and offer approaches for encounters with immigration officials such as ICE. This event is free and open to all. <h4>Know Your Rights Training</h4>

<p>The Town of Nelson Democrats along with Carolyn and Dave Holmes invite you to meet Mandi Drake. She is our Democratic Party candidate for the New York State 53rd Senate District. <br><br>The event is from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed, 3402 Old State Road, Erieville.</p><p>Mandi sees herself as part of a new generation of Democrats emerging across the country. Her background in education and creative work reflects a career grounded in the day-to-day realities of working families, particularly those affected by affordability challenges.</p><p>Mandi is a visual artist and some of her artwork will be on display during the event.</p><p>The New York State 53rd Senate District includes all of Madison County. It also spans Oneida County (including the cities of Rome and Utica), and parts of Chenango County.</p><p>The Shoppes at Johnny Appleseed is a unique cooperative-style artisan marketplace located six miles outside of Cazenovia. The meet and greet event will be held in the on-site eatery called the Apple Kitchen. A selection of several homemade soups and/or desserts will be provided. There will be other selections off the menu, plus craft beer and wine, available for purchase.</p><p>Stop by to meet Mandi and learn about her vision and priorities for our district. <p>Community members are invited to a fundraiser on Sunday, November 2, from 2 to 4 p.m., benefiting the people of Ukraine and local refugees. The event will take place in Madison Hall on Route 20 at the north end of the Morrisville State College campus.</p><p>As Ukraine marks over three years of resisting Russia's full-scale invasion, the gathering highlights the tremendous sacrifices made by Ukrainians in defense of democracy, free speech, and national sovereignty – principles that echo the founding ideals of the United States 250 years ago. Russia's aggression, led by Vladimir Putin, aims not only to subjugate Ukraine but to erase its cultural identity, plunder its resources, and impose a vision of a "greater Russia" through violence and intimidation.</p><p>The event features compelling presentations by two distinguished scholars, offering insights into the human and historical costs of unchecked authoritarianism. Nancy Ries, emerita professor of anthropology and peace and conflict studies at Colgate University, will speak on "Destroying the World: Russia's Cruel War on Ukraine and Escalating Atrocities at Home." Professor Ries refers to Russia as a "thugocracy," where cruelty and intimidation maintain domestic control, while state resources fuel criminal enterprises worldwide.</p><p>The keynote address will be delivered by Tetiana Hranchak, a visiting research scholar at Syracuse University's Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs of Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Her talk, "Russia’s War in Ukraine: Historical Background and Uncertain Future," contextualizes the current war against the background of Russia's long-standing pattern of territorial aggression and genocidal policies. She frames the Russian full-scaled invasion as a broader westward expansion aimed at Russian political dominance and emphasizes Ukraine's key role in deterring aggression. A 20-year researcher at the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine and a board member of the Ukrainian Library Association, Hranchak has personally lost her home to the war and now resides in the U.S.</p><p>There is no admission fee but attendees are encouraged to donate to three key organizations:</p><p>· <a href="https://www.razomforukraine.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Razom for Ukraine</a>: A New York City-based nonprofit providing humanitarian aid, training for first responders, and advocacy for Ukrainian causes.</p><p>· <a href="https://www.ala.org/aboutala/ukraine-library-relief-fund" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Ukraine Library Relief Fund</a> (via the American Library Association): Supporting the Ukrainian Library Association in reconstructing libraries damaged by Russian aggression.</p><p>· <a href="https://www.thecenterutica.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Resource Center for Refugees in the Mohawk Valley</a> (The Center): Assisting immigrants from diverse backgrounds, including many Ukrainian refugees, amid funding cuts to essential programs. At this time there are no new refugee admissions to the U.S.. The Center continues to support those already settled.</p><p>The war's toll has been staggering: Russia has suffered approximately 1 million casualties, including 250,000 deaths, while Ukraine reports 300,000 casualties with 60,000 to 80,000 killed (per U.K. and U.S. government estimates). Civilian casualties stand at 49,000, with 16,000 deaths (UN data).</p><p>This event serves as a call to action, reminding us of the dangers when absolute power corrupts a nation and its media. <h4>No Kings Rally</h4>

<p>We are staging a <strong>Rally For Resistance</strong> from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 1, in the Village of Hamilton.&nbsp;We need to clearly demonstrate to our community and our elected officials that we’re ready to fight and do what is necessary to stop the outrageous actions of the Trump&nbsp;administration.<br><br>Bring a sign or just yourself&nbsp;as we gather at the northern end of the Village Green. You can park along Broad Street or there is free&nbsp;parking at the Hamilton Public Library.&nbsp;<br><br>Our theme is resistance, voicing our opposition to Trump's unconstitutional power grab and&nbsp;gutting of&nbsp;the federal workforce, which will harm services that seniors, veterans, farmers, and all of us in Madison County depend on.<br><br>We want to make clear that NOBODY elected Elon, and he and his minions need&nbsp;to&nbsp;be prevented&nbsp;from accessing sensitive government databases. AND, we need to let folks know how the Republicans' <a href="https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Fuv2QidhJ/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">proposed budget</a> benefits only the wealthy, and hurts working families in our county.&nbsp;<br><br><strong>Some tips for Saturday:</strong></p><ul><li><p>Lettering on your signs should be thick and easily seen from a distance. &nbsp;Messages on the front AND back are a bonus.</p></li><li><p>Keep on the sidewalk and out of the road. Stay safe!</p></li><li><p>Do not engage the opposition.&nbsp;If protesters engage in back and forth shouting, the message gets lost.&nbsp;</p></li><li><p>Please check our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MadCoNYDems/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Facebook page</a> for any last-minute changes due to weather.&nbsp;</p></li><li><p>Be creative with your signs.&nbsp;Overall, it can sometimes be better to stay positive.
